I am working on a project that looks at the 1961 Japanese film Buddha and its reception in East and Southeast Asia. In particular, I want to create a map using GIS to show, in essence, the relative penetration of film as a mode of popular entertainment in various East and Southeast Asian countries (Japan, Laos, Thailand, Burma, etc.) in 1960 (or thereabouts). I am thinking that this can be expressed in terms of movie-theaters-per-capita or simply number of movie theaters in a given urban district. Ideally, I would like to work with shapefiles that have already been generated to visually represent this data, but databases that have this information would also be very helpful. Does anyone have any knowledge of any such resources?
